How will you choose a tool for test automation?

  2. Posted 11/24/2004 at 1:37 am | Permalink

Depends on type of testing. suppose if you want to functional testing then you will use the WinRunner and if you want to management tool you are using the Test Director , if you want to server performance then you should use the LoadRunner.

Depending on the environment, Budget, Time and the type of Testing a suitable tool can be selected.

Choosing a right tool for test automation is like choosing the right kinda girl for marriage. I admit I have not found the later, but incase of former - there are many criterias.

First, is the budget.Second is customability, u sure would want to go for a tool that is easy to adopt, and customize. Test automation is not just record and playback, 70% of automation involves in customizations and writing scripts. And, a tool can also be project specific.

Functional, regression etc testing can be manual till date, but imagine in performance testing……100 testers sitting on 100 workstations and ready to press “return” key…whenever someone shouts “go” is impossible. So as far as I think, performance testing should be automated, say with a LoadRunner. Also, everything is project specific. Not to mention much. But if u guys have any queries, u can contact me on prithvideb@yahoo.co.in

How will you choose a tool for test automation?
Choosing a tool for test automation, is really a challenging problem.
It depends on the type of testing to be carried out,
e.g. For Functional and Regression Testing, we should you tools such as WinRunner, Quick Test Professional, SilkTest, Rational Robot.

For Performance Testing, We should use, LoadRunner, Rational Robot - VUScript

For Maintenance of Test Cases - We should use Test Director, Test Manager etc.

    Regarding question #10/11

The main difference between Winrunner, Loadrunner and Test Director is

    1. a)Winrunner is a Functional testing tool,
    b)Loadrunner is Performance tool and
    c)Test director is Management tool.

    a) Winrunner: 1.you can record the script automatically or manually you can write scripts.
2.This is mainly use for Regression testing.

    b) Loadrunner: 1. This tool is mainly used for Performance testing.
    2. we can also use this tool for Load testing and Stress Testing
    c) Test director: 1. This is a Management tool.
Test director tool contains: 1. Test Plan
    2. Test Cases
    3. Time estimation
    4. Shedule documents
    5. Bug Lists

I think this is sufficient for the question #10/#11

What company sponsors this thread? I guess this isn’t a legitimate OPEN thread for discussion and sharing of applications and ideas, since my last post was chosen to be deleted. How dare I suggest another application as something that should be considered…considering that was the question that was posted.

Please, feel free to email me directly and explain what I’m missing here.

Selecting a effective automation tool is a tough job than automating application. So take your time and take a wise decision. Before buying a license of any automation tool
    1. Check your requirement
    2. Budgeting
    3. If possible, then take a evaluation version of tool before finalization of the same and check the feasibility whether this is the effective tool for your application and then make a decision accordingly. There are lot many other things which we can discuss but again what is the requirement. . . .
